“This is my five string serenade
Beneath the water I play
And while I’m playing for you
It could be raining there too.”
Feeeeel the rhythm coooming down! 🎵
TITLE: “Rhythm by the Bonfire” 9x12in watercolour . FINISHED!
Early in August the annual Tenrikyo Picnic was held at Kapiolani Park.
I was having a fun chat with my friend Yuki-chan, who’s also a creative (she designs nail art), about what I want to do in life.
Out of the blue I blurt out,
“I WANNA DRAW!”
“Did you say you wanna draw?” someone said behind me.
It’s Big Jay!
I said “Yeah!” and showed him my travel sketchbook. “You draw everyday?”
“Yup at the bus stop, while waiting for the bus!”
“Ok cool, I’m looking for someone to draw my album for me, do you wanna do that?”
I listened to his song, “Rhythm Going Down” and closed my eyes.
I saw people…some dancing, some just standing around a bonfire. At the beach.
There’s this one girl, who really gets into the groove.
At first I thought I wanted to just show that camaraderie.
Later on, I looked at it again and felt like something’s missing. It’s so flat.
So I added a backdrop of the sky, the moon and the ocean. I also wanted it to look like, the viewer can join in, too.
It’s not just the people, but also the ambience of the surroundings –
in Nature, one can also feel the rhythm.

Today I went to my favorite place in town. 😌
As a warm-up, I sketched the random people outside the window.
It was a mood for quiet, bittersweet music. After so many years, I remember and wanted to listen to “Looks Like December” by Antonio Carlos Jobim.
‘I still sing te quiero, bolero, our rhymes are so banal.
Oh how I still long for tus besos never more.
Tus besos nunca mas.’
I must’ve listened to it 10 times. To finish drawing Tom Jobim himself.
I played “Flowers in December” next by Mazzy Star because I didn’t want to get tired of the other song. It’s too precious for that.
Immediately I’m captivated by Hope Sandoval. Her eyes are so beautiful, her voice so fitting for the song.
Oh, I just realize they both have ‘December’ in the title! 😲
Did I mention that I love music too?
I like different genres, but mostly I’m into 60s-70s kind of music. So today I wanna talk about one of my favorite songs from that era, plus lyrics!
“Our House” by Crosby, Stills & Nash
Album: Deja Vu (1970)
Some background info: I once read that this song was written by Graham Nash while he was living together with Joni Mitchell.
